Ribeira A riverside square with medieval origins, remodelled in the 18th century. A fountain on the north side carries a statue of St John the Baptist by João Cutileiro, and the Cube of the Ribeira sculpture by José Rodrigues stands nearby. 
Ribeira The 19th-century stock exchange palace of the Associação Comercial do Porto, a national monument. It's visited on a guided tour of about 30 minutes in Portuguese, Spanish, French or English. 
Ribeira The church of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia, begun around 1550 in Renaissance style. Its baroque façade on Rua das Flores was redesigned by Nicolau Nasoni after 1740.

Miragaia A 19th-century neoclassical customs house on the Douro, with one façade to the river and one to the city. Eduardo Souto Moura adapted it, and it now holds the Alfândega Porto Congress Centre. 
Miragaia A 17th-century church whose façade resembles that of São Lourenço. It has a rococo altarpiece and tiles showing the life of Santa Rita of Cascia.
Massarelos Landscaped gardens above the Douro with several small viewpoints. The views take in the river, the Serra do Pilar, the Gaia riverside and the Arrábida Bridge. 
Massarelos A municipal museum in the Quinta da Macieirinha house, part of the Museu do Porto network. Visit tickets are sold through the network's ticket office.
Massarelos The tram museum, opened in 1992 in the old Massarelos power station by the Douro. It holds trams and service vehicles from Porto's lines and part of the original generating equipment. 
Massarelos The municipal library inside the Palácio de Cristal gardens, opened in 2001 in a building by architect José Manuel Soares. It has children's, general reading and multimedia sections over two floors.
Massarelos Portugal's first public art museum, founded in 1833 and housed in the 18th-century Carrancas Palace. Its collection includes António Soares dos Reis's sculpture O Desterrado, and two gardens are open to visitors. 
Massarelos A church begun in 1776 and dedicated to São Pedro Gonzalez Telmo. The river-facing rear façade has a tile panel on the Age of Discovery showing Prince Henry. 
Cedofeita A street about 650 metres long with art galleries, bookshops, design and furniture shops and restaurants. New exhibitions often open on the same afternoon.
Cedofeita A Romanesque church whose chancel dates from the 11th century. The north portal tympanum shows the Agnus Dei. 
Cedofeita A garden laid out in 1865 and 1866 by landscaper Emile David, named for the rope makers who worked here for about 200 years. It holds statues of Ramalho Ortigão and António Nobre and sculptures by Juan Muñoz from 2001. 
Cedofeita A late 18th-century rococo church whose side façade was covered in tiles in 1912, with scenes drawn by Silvestre Silvestri. The visit also covers the Casa Escondida and historic rooms. 
Cedofeita A 17th-century church with a classical façade from the 1850s attributed to Nicolau Nasoni. The altarpiece is a rococo piece in the Porto style. 
Cedofeita The first public garden in Porto, inaugurated in 1834. It's the only city garden still enclosed by railings, with four gates, a lake and a marble fountain from the former Convento de São Domingos.
Cedofeita A palace remodelled in the 19th century that received the exiled King Carlos Alberto of Sardinia in 1849. It has belonged to Porto city council since 1959 and hosts temporary exhibitions and events.
Cedofeita One of the city's main shopping streets, opened in 1784 to extend an older road. The buildings along it date from the 17th to the 20th centuries.
Cedofeita A student café on the square near the university, open since 1909 and known as Piolho. Students leave messages on the walls.
Cedofeita A coffee house built in 1953 and designed by architect Carlos Neves, with lampshades and decoration referring to the conquest of Ceuta. It's one of the few 1950s cafés still running in the city.

Baixa and Aliados A Baroque bell tower that has stood over the city since 1763, with a 360-degree view from the top. The day ticket also covers the Clérigos Museum. 
Baixa and Aliados A bookshop in a neo-Gothic building from 1906, with two floors, a crimson staircase and a lit stained-glass window. Every ticket works as a voucher towards a book bought in the shop. 
Baixa and Aliados A working railway station built in the early 20th century on the site of a former convent. The entrance hall is covered with 20,000 azulejo tiles by Jorge Colaço showing the history of transport and scenes of Portuguese life, under a glass and cast-iron roof by Marques da Silva. 
Baixa and Aliados The avenue and square at the centre of the Baixa, lined with buildings from the 1920s to 1940s and ending at the city hall. A statue of King D. Pedro IV, unveiled in 1866, stands in the middle of the square, and the avenue has a central water mirror. 
Baixa and Aliados A church built between 1709 and 1739 on Praça da Batalha. The facade is covered in azulejo panels by Jorge Colaço showing scenes from the life of Saint Ildefonso, and inside is a carved altarpiece with a design by Nicolau Nasoni.

Bonfim The city's main railway station in the east, opened in 1877. It takes trains on the Norte, Minho and Douro lines plus suburban services. 
Bonfim FC Porto's stadium, opened in 2003 and designed by Manuel Salgado, with a museum of about 7,000 square metres in 27 themed areas. It shows more than 200 trophies and 280 interactive videos, plus Joana Vasconcelos' artwork Valquíria Dragão. 
Bonfim A church built between 1874 and 1894 with a facade flanked by two 42-metre bell towers. Inside, a neoclassical altarpiece includes a panel of the Calvary. 
Bonfim Porto's first public cemetery, inaugurated in 1839, with neo-Gothic funerary art in granite. It holds a chapel, the charnel house of the nuns of the old São Bento de Avé-Maria convent and an iron Christ on the cemetery cross.
Bonfim A park of about 10 hectares in the east of the city, opened in June 2010.
Bonfim A museum of weapons and equipment from the 16th to the 20th century, with a focus on events in Porto such as the French Invasions, the Liberal Wars and the 1891 republican uprising. It also holds a collection of toy soldier miniatures.

Vila Nova de Gaia Double-deck iron arch bridge over the Douro, designed by Théophile Seyrig and opened in 1886. The upper deck carries the Metro and pedestrians between the cathedral area and the Jardim do Morro, the lower deck keeps road traffic.

Boavista Large roundabout at the centre of Boavista, built around the Monument to the Heroes of the Peninsular War, inaugurated in 1951. An obelisk carries an eagle for Napoleon's army and a lion for the Portuguese.

Foz do Douro The largest urban park in Portugal at 83 hectares, running down to the Atlantic. Sidónio Pardal designed it and the first phase opened in 1993. 
Foz do Douro 17th-century fort on a rounded rock at the seafront, built against raids from the sea. Its official name is Forte de São Francisco Xavier. 
Foz do Douro Aquarium beside the Castelo do Queijo, with an underwater tunnel and daily feeding sessions.
Foz do Douro Fort built at the end of the 16th century to protect the Douro entrance, with 17th-century bastions and an 18th-century gate. It now houses the Porto office of the Instituto de Defesa Nacional. 
Foz do Douro Late 19th-century seafront garden lined with palms, with a miniature golf course, a bandstand, a granite fountain from the former São Francisco convent and a small Swiss-style chalet from 1874. The public toilet of 1910 is decorated with Art Nouveau tiles. 
Foz do Douro Hexagonal neoclassical lighthouse, ten metres high, dated 1886, with a red balcony and lantern. The light was deactivated in 2009 and only the sound signal remains. 
Foz do Douro Blue Flag beach in Foz with 86 metres of sand and gently sloping cliffs. Old metamorphic rock outcrops nearby make it a start for short walks.
Foz do Douro Beach in Foz with a Blue Flag and a Golden Beach award. The São Bartolomeu procession ends here on the last Sunday of August, with a group sea bath.
Foz do Douro Blue Flag beach with 168 metres of sand, named for the breakwater that shelters the bathing area. The Pérgola da Foz stands above it, with a staircase and cafe terraces. 
Foz do Douro Neoclassical pergola by the sea in golden yellow, with a small garden beside it. The columns cast long shadows over the paving at sunset, and cafes and walkways are close by. 
Foz do Douro Baroque church in Foz do Douro. Its altarpiece is counted among the finest of the D. João V style in Porto, and it has eight carved side altars.

Matosinhos Wide urban beach of white sand with a bathing area of 115,000 square metres. It is also used by surfers and bodyboarders when the sea is rougher.

Matosinhos Baroque church begun in 1542 and enlarged in the 18th century by Nicolau Nasoni. The gilded main altar holds a hollow wooden Christ about two metres tall, attributed to the 12th century.
Matosinhos Net sculpture by the American artist Janet Echelman on a roundabout in Matosinhos, dedicated to the local fishermen. Locals call it the Anémona. 
Matosinhos Seawater swimming pools on Leça da Palmeira beach, designed by Álvaro Siza Vieira and opened in 1966. A National Monument since 2011.
Matosinhos Restaurant in the Álvaro Siza building on the rocks at Boa Nova, with chef Rui Paula. Closed Sunday and Monday. 
Matosinhos Lighthouse in service since 15 December 1926, one of 30 on the Portuguese mainland coast. The lighthouse keepers' school worked here from 1926 to 1962. 
Matosinhos Chapel founded in 1392 and dedicated to São Clemente das Penhas. It belonged to a small Franciscan monastery that moved to the Conceição estate in 1478. 
Matosinhos Long white-sand beach in Leça da Palmeira with fewer rocks towards the south. Popular with surfers and bodyboarders, and the municipality warns that the sea calls for extra care.

Matosinhos 17th-century fort with a four-pointed bastioned plan, built after 1640 as part of the coastal defence line with the São João da Foz and Queijo forts. It now houses the captaincy of the Port of Leixões.
