Galleries, bookshops and student cafés

Cedofeita is the area around Rua de Cedofeita and Rua de Miguel Bombarda. It has the city's gallery street, several bookshops and a few old cafés.

Rua de Miguel Bombarda is about 650 metres long and holds art galleries, bookshops, design shops and restaurants, with new exhibitions often opening on the same afternoon. Rua de Cedofeita, opened in 1784, is one of the main shopping streets. The Igreja de Cedofeita has a chancel dating from the 11th century.

The Jardim da Cordoaria was laid out in 1865 and 1866 and holds sculptures by Juan Muñoz from 2001. The Igreja do Carmo is open daily 9:30 to 18:00 from 1 April to 30 October, and the combined church and circuit ticket costs €8. Next to it, the Igreja dos Carmelitas has free entry.

Café Ceuta, built in 1953, is one of the few 1950s cafés still running. Café Piolho, a student café open since 1909, opens Monday to Saturday from 7:00. Gato Vadio is a bookshop with a café and a patio, and the Praça de Carlos Alberto has Café Luso and Moustache Coffee House.

Getting there

Rua de Cedofeita and Rua de Miguel Bombarda are the two main streets. Café Piolho is on the square near the university, and the Praça de Carlos Alberto has the Balsemão palace on its east side.

Walk Rua de Miguel Bombarda in the afternoon, when new exhibitions often open. The Igreja do Carmo and the Igreja dos Carmelitas are both on Rua do Carmo.

Museu d'Avó is a candle-lit restaurant open Monday to Saturday from 20:00 to 04:00. Garrafeira / Bar A.M. Santos pours Port by the glass and is closed on Sunday.

Church · Free Igreja de Cedofeita A Romanesque church whose chancel dates from the 11th century. The north portal tympanum shows the Agnus Dei.

Park Jardim da Cordoaria A garden laid out in 1865 and 1866 by landscaper Emile David, named for the rope makers who worked here for about 200 years. It holds statues of Ramalho Ortigão and António Nobre and sculptures by Juan Muñoz from 2001.

Church · € Igreja do Carmo A late 18th-century rococo church whose side façade was covered in tiles in 1912, with scenes drawn by Silvestre Silvestri. The visit also covers the Casa Escondida and historic rooms.

Church · Free Igreja dos Carmelitas A 17th-century church with a classical façade from the 1850s attributed to Nicolau Nasoni. The altarpiece is a rococo piece in the Porto style.

Park Jardim de São Lázaro The first public garden in Porto, inaugurated in 1834. It's the only city garden still enclosed by railings, with four gates, a lake and a marble fountain from the former Convento de São Domingos.

Landmark Palacete dos Viscondes de Balsemão A palace remodelled in the 19th century that received the exiled King Carlos Alberto of Sardinia in 1849. It has belonged to Porto city council since 1959 and hosts temporary exhibitions and events.

Shopping Rua de Cedofeita One of the city's main shopping streets, opened in 1784 to extend an older road. The buildings along it date from the 17th to the 20th centuries.

Cafe Café Piolho A student café on the square near the university, open since 1909 and known as Piolho. Students leave messages on the walls.

Cafe Café Ceuta A coffee house built in 1953 and designed by architect Carlos Neves, with lampshades and decoration referring to the conquest of Ceuta. It's one of the few 1950s cafés still running in the city.

Food Museu d'Avó A small candle-lit restaurant decorated with objects from grandparents' houses. It serves petiscos and keeps its kitchen open late.

Shopping Gato Vadio A bookshop with a café, a design workshop and a patio. It also runs readings, concerts and film screenings.

Nightlife Café Candelabro A bar in a former second-hand bookshop from 1952, renovated in 2009. Shelves of books on cinema, photography, theatre and the visual arts can be browsed or bought.

Shopping Livraria Almedina A bookshop on Rua de Ceuta, in a street known for bookshops, opened in the early 1980s. It specialises in law and technical titles and also stocks literature and children's books.

Landmark Praça de Carlos Alberto A square once called Praça dos Ferradores for the blacksmiths' workshops there. The Balsemão palace stands on its east side and a monument to the Portuguese dead of the Great War is in the garden at its centre.

Food · €€ Café Luso A café, restaurant and beer house on Praça de Carlos Alberto, open since 1935 and restored in 2010. The house specialities are the francesinha and salt cod, and there is a smaller room downstairs with outdoor seating.

Cafe Moustache Coffee House A coffee house in a two-floor building on Praça de Carlos Alberto, with takeaway at the counter or seating inside. It also hosts events, book displays and live music.

Wine bar Garrafeira / Bar A.M. Santos A wine shop with a large range of Port, which also pours wine by the glass and runs tastings. Tapas, ham and cheese boards are served.
