Baixa and Aliados

Tiled station, towers and Porto's main avenue

The Baixa is the city centre, running from the Clérigos Tower and Livraria Lello down to São Bento Station and Avenida dos Aliados. Azulejo panels, churches, theatres and a bookshop are packed into a few streets.

São Bento Station has an entrance hall covered with 20,000 azulejo tiles by Jorge Colaço, and it is a working railway station. Avenida dos Aliados runs from Praça da Liberdade to the city hall, which has a 70-metre tower reached by 180 steps. Tower visits take place on the first Sunday of each month and must be booked in advance.

The Clérigos Tower has stood over the city since 1763, and the day ticket of €10 covers the tower and the museum. Livraria Lello is open daily 09:00 to 19:30, and every ticket works as a voucher toward a book. Praça da Batalha has the Church of Santo Ildefonso, with azulejo panels on its facade, and the Teatro Nacional São João.

Rua Galeria de Paris, a street of buildings from 1903, has bars and jazz venues. Padaria Ribeiro has traded since 1878 and is open Monday to Saturday, 07:00 to 20:00, and Confeitaria Serrana is known for its large bolas de Berlim.

Getting there

São Bento Station is on Praça de Almeida Garrett, and the Congregados Church stands next to it. Avenida dos Aliados runs from Praça da Liberdade to the city hall. Casa Oriental is next to the Clérigos Tower.

Start at São Bento Station and walk up Avenida dos Aliados, then continue to Livraria Lello and the Clérigos Tower. Praça da Batalha and Rua Galeria de Paris are close by.

Where to eat and drink

Pontual on Rua do Almada is known for its francesinhas and stays open until 02:00. Taxca serves a ham sandwich, and Sical is a café open since 1947 with tiled panels by Júlio de Resende.

Landmark São Bento Station A working railway station built in the early 20th century on the site of a former convent. Landmark Avenida dos Aliados and Praça da Liberdade The avenue and square at the centre of the Baixa, lined with buildings from the 1920s to 1940s and ending at the city hall. A statue of King D. Pedro IV, unveiled in 1866, stands in the middle of the square, and the avenue has a central water mirror.

Church · Free Church of Santo Ildefonso A church built between 1709 and 1739 on Praça da Batalha. The facade is covered in azulejo panels by Jorge Colaço showing scenes from the life of Saint Ildefonso, and inside is a carved altarpiece with a design by Nicolau Nasoni.

Shopping Casa Oriental A grocery next to the Clérigos Tower, founded in 1910 and now linked to the Comur cannery in Murtosa. It sells about thirty varieties of canned seafood.

Food Taxca A tasca opened in September 2013 in the Baixa, known for its Badalhoca-style ham sandwich (sande de presunto).

Food Cervejaria Gazela A cervejaria with table service and takeaway. Its site lists three branches in Porto, and this one is on Travessa de Cimo de Vila.

Nightlife Plano B A multipurpose bar and club on Rua Cândido dos Reis, founded by architects and an artist-musician. It also hosts exhibitions, concerts and film programmes.

Nightlife Aduela A taberna-bar across from the Teatro Carlos Alberto, serving wine by the glass and traditional Portuguese snacks. The bar counter was once a judge's table.

Nightlife Rua Galeria de Paris A street of buildings from 1903, with an Art Nouveau facade at number 28. Cloth warehouses once filled it, and bars arrived after 2007, followed by jazz concerts and more venues.

Cafe Padaria Ribeiro A bakery near the Clérigos area that has traded since 1878. It sells bread and pastries to take away.

Cafe Sical A café open since 1947, with tiled panels by Júlio de Resende and a painting by António Quadros inside. It serves pastries, sandwiches, juices and its own-brand coffee.

Cafe Confeitaria Serrana A pastry shop on Rua do Loureiro with a ceiling painting by Acácio Lino and an iron staircase to a first floor with sculptures. It is known for its large bolas de Berlim, a filled doughnut.

Food Pontual A café-restaurant on Rua do Almada known for its francesinhas. The menu also has steak sandwich, steak with chips and alheira sausage.

Nightlife Champanheria da Baixa A champagne bar in a tavern-style room on Largo de Mompilher.
