Miragaia

Two churches and a customs house on the Douro

Miragaia is a short stretch of the Douro bank with two old churches and a customs house on the water. It has fewer sights than its neighbours.

The Igreja de São Pedro de Miragaia is one of the city's oldest churches and was reworked in the 1830s. Its chancel is covered in carved wood from several periods, and a Flemish triptych shows the Pentecost. Entry is free, and Visit Porto lists Tuesday to Saturday 15:30 to 19:00 and Sunday 10:00 to 11:30, closed Monday.

The Igreja do Convento de São João Novo is a 17th-century church with a rococo altarpiece and tiles showing the life of Santa Rita of Cascia. Entry is free.

The Alfândega Nova do Porto, a 19th-century neoclassical customs house on the Douro, has one façade to the river and one to the city. Eduardo Souto Moura adapted it, and it now holds the Alfândega Porto Congress Centre.

Getting there

The Alfândega Nova do Porto is on Rua Nova da Alfândega and faces the Douro. The Igreja de São Pedro de Miragaia is on Largo de São Pedro de Miragaia, and the São João Novo church is on Largo de São João Novo.
