Sé and Vitória

Cathedral terrace and the Vitória viewpoint

The Sé and Vitória area climbs the hill above Ribeira, with the Romanesque cathedral at the top and the Miradouro da Vitória a few minutes away. The walls, gardens and small museums on the slope are quieter than the quay below.

Porto Cathedral was begun in the 12th and 13th centuries and has a Gothic cloister with tiles by Vital Rifarto. The church, museum and cloister are open 9:00 to 18:30 in summer and 9:00 to 17:30 in winter, and a combined ticket costs €4. Next to it, the Paço Episcopal's open Monday to Sunday, and the visit ends with a view over the Douro.

In front of the cathedral, the Terreiro da Sé looks over the Barredo, the river and Vila Nova de Gaia. The Miradouro da Vitória, beside the Church of Nossa Senhora da Vitória, shows the cathedral, the Dom Luís I Bridge and the Gaia riverside. The Jardim das Virtudes, a terraced garden on a steep slope, is open 9:00 to 18:00 from 1 October to 30 March.

Smaller stops include the Casa-Museu Guerra Junqueiro, open Tuesday to Sunday, and the Museu das Marionetas do Porto, where adults pay €3.50 and it's closed Monday and Tuesday. The Centro Português de Fotografia is free, and you'll see two surviving stretches of the Muralha Fernandina on the slope toward the river.

Getting there

The Terreiro da Sé looks down over the Barredo and the Douro. The upper deck of the Dom Luís I Bridge carries the Metro and pedestrians between the cathedral area and the Jardim do Morro in Gaia. Café Fénix, on Rua do Ferraz, is about 150 metres from the Vitória viewpoint.
