Ribeira

Quayside square, stock exchange and wine bars

Ribeira is the old riverside district at the foot of the hill, centred on the Praça da Ribeira and the quay along the Douro. The Palácio da Bolsa, Rua das Flores and a row of wine bars and restaurants are all within a few minutes' walk.

The Palácio da Bolsa, the 19th-century stock exchange palace, is visited on a guided tour of about 30 minutes in Portuguese, Spanish, French or English. The visiting hours are printed as 9:00 to 18:30, and the individual ticket is €14. Next door on Rua do Infante Dom Henrique is the Igreja de São Francisco.

Rua das Flores was laid out in 1521 by order of King Manuel and is pedestrian. The Igreja da Misericórdia on it has a baroque façade redesigned by Nicolau Nasoni, and entry is free, with Visit Porto listing Tuesday to Sunday, 9:00 to 12:00. The Casa do Infante on Rua da Alfândega is open Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 17:30, and the iron Mercado Ferreira Borges, built in 1885, is now an events venue.

Along the quay, Wine Quay Bar lists Portuguese wines with short tasting notes, and Bacalhau Portuguese Wine & Food has a dining room over the Douro. A Marina serves homemade food in a granite building on the quay, open Monday to Saturday.

Getting there

Ribeira sits on the Douro, with its quay facing the Gaia bank. Across the river is the Gaia quay with its Port lodges. The Praça da Ribeira, the Palácio da Bolsa on Rua de Ferreira Borges and Rua das Flores are all close together.

What to see

Start on the Praça da Ribeira, then walk up to the Palácio da Bolsa and along Rua das Flores. The Casa do Infante is a short walk back toward the river.

The quay has restaurants with terraces facing the Douro, such as Café do Cais, open daily 12:00 to 23:00. Mercearia das Flores sells cheese, sausages and wine and has tables inside where you can eat what you buy.

Landmark Praça da Ribeira A riverside square with medieval origins, remodelled in the 18th century. A fountain on the north side carries a statue of St John the Baptist by João Cutileiro, and the Cube of the Ribeira sculpture by José Rodrigues stands nearby.

Church · Free Igreja da Misericórdia The church of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia, begun around 1550 in Renaissance style. Its baroque façade on Rua das Flores was redesigned by Nicolau Nasoni after 1740.
