Concert hall, Serralves and the botanical garden
Boavista is the western avenue district, centred on the Boavista Roundabout and the Casa da Música. Serralves, the Porto Botanical Garden and several smaller museums are within it.
The Casa da Música is a concert hall designed by Rem Koolhaas and home of the Porto National Orchestra. Guided tours of the building are offered, and the café is open daily 09:00 to 22:00. The Boavista Roundabout is built around the Monument to the Heroes of the Peninsular War, inaugurated in 1951.
Serralves includes the Museum of Contemporary Art in a building by Álvaro Siza, the park with its Treetop Walk, the Art Deco Casa de Serralves and the House of Cinema Manoel de Oliveira. The general ticket is €24 and the park-only ticket is €15. Entry is free on the first Sunday of each month, and children under 12 are free.
The Porto Botanical Garden, created in 1951, has formal gardens divided by camellia hedges, a cactus garden and an arboretum around a lake. Entry is free. The Bom Sucesso Market is a market hall from 1952 with food stalls and a programme of concerts.
Getting there
The Boavista Roundabout is the centre of the district, built around the Monument to the Heroes of the Peninsular War. The Paper Money Museum stands across from the Parque da Cidade.
What to see
The general Serralves ticket covers the museum, the Siza wing, the park, the Treetop Walk, the villa and the House of Cinema. The Botanical Garden and the Casa da Música are separate stops.
Where to eat and drink
A Badalhoca, a tasca open since 1929, serves crusty rolls filled with sliced ham and is closed on Sunday. Confeitaria Petúlia, open since 1972, is known for bolo-rei.
