Foz do Douro

Beaches, forts and the river mouth

Foz do Douro is where the river meets the Atlantic, with a seafront promenade, several Blue Flag beaches and two old forts. The Parque da Cidade runs down to the sea at its northern edge.

The Parque da Cidade do Porto is the largest urban park in Portugal at 83 hectares, and runs down to the Atlantic. Beside the Castelo do Queijo, a 17th-century fort, Sea Life Porto has an underwater tunnel and a basic ticket of €19 per adult. The Forte de São João Baptista da Foz, built at the end of the 16th century, guards the Douro entrance.

The Praia dos Ingleses, Praia do Ourigo and Praia do Molhe all hold a Blue Flag. The Pérgola do Molhe stands above the Praia do Molhe, with cafes close by, and the Jardim do Passeio Alegre has palms, a bandstand and a chalet from 1874. The Felgueiras Lighthouse, dated 1886, still gives a sound signal.

For pastries, Café Moreira has been open since 1964, daily from 07:00 to 21:00, and Padaria Formosa has baked since 1898 in a wood-fired oven. Confeitaria Tavi has a terrace facing the sea.
