Massarelos
Palace gardens, the tram museum and an art museum
Massarelos runs along the Douro and up to the Palácio de Cristal gardens. The Museu do Carro Eléctrico and the Soares dos Reis National Museum are both here.
The Jardins do Palácio de Cristal are free and open 8:00 to 21:00 from April to September and 8:00 to 19:00 from October to March. Their small viewpoints look over the river, the Serra do Pilar, the Gaia riverside and the Arrábida Bridge. The Biblioteca Municipal Almeida Garrett sits inside the gardens and has a children's section.
The Soares dos Reis National Museum, Portugal's first public art museum, was founded in 1833 and is housed in the 18th-century Carrancas Palace. The general ticket is €10 and it is closed on Mondays. The Museu Romântico da Quinta da Macieirinha is open Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 17:30.
Down by the river, the Museu do Carro Eléctrico opened in 1992 in the old Massarelos power station. Adults pay €8 and ages 6 to 18 pay €4. Rua do Campo Alegre has Cervejaria Galiza, open daily 08:00 to 01:45, and Capa Negra II, known for francesinhas.
Getting there
The Museu do Carro Eléctrico stands by the Douro in the old Massarelos power station. The Palácio de Cristal gardens are above the river, and the Soares dos Reis museum and the Museu Romântico are on nearby streets. The Arrábida Bridge is visible from the garden viewpoints.

Where to eat and drink
Cervejaria Galiza on Rua do Campo Alegre is a large beer hall serving francesinha, cod and fresh seafood. Capa Negra II is on the same street.
