Seafood, a long beach and Siza buildings
Matosinhos is known for its seafood restaurants and its long beach. Álvaro Siza's Piscina das Marés is at Leça da Palmeira, and his Casa de Chá da Boa Nova is at Boa Nova.
The Praia de Matosinhos is a wide white-sand beach used by surfers and bodyboarders when the sea is rougher. The Matosinhos Municipal Market keeps its east and west gates open until midnight from Tuesday to Saturday to serve the restaurants. The Bom Jesus de Matosinhos Church was begun in 1542 and enlarged by Nicolau Nasoni.
The seafood restaurants include Esplanada Marisqueira, open since 1957, and O Gaveto on Rua Roberto Ivens. The Casa da Arquitectura occupies a former industrial building. She Changes, a net sculpture by Janet Echelman, stands on a roundabout.
At Leça da Palmeira and Boa Nova are the Piscina das Marés, seawater pools designed by Álvaro Siza and opened in 1966, and the Casa de Chá da Boa Nova, closed Sunday and Monday. The Leça Lighthouse has been in service since 1926, and entry is 4.90 euros.
Getting there
The Matosinhos Municipal Market is in central Matosinhos. The Piscina das Marés is on Leça da Palmeira beach, and the Leça Lighthouse and the Boa Nova Chapel are on the same stretch of coast.
What to see
Start in the town at the market and the Bom Jesus church, then continue to Leça da Palmeira and Boa Nova. The Piscina das Marés is open only June to September.

Esplanada Marisqueira has several dining rooms and a large wine list, and 5 Oceanos Matosinhos serves fish and shellfish. Casa de Chá da Boa Nova is a restaurant in a Siza building on the rocks.
