Vila Nova de Gaia

Port lodges on the south bank

Vila Nova de Gaia is the south bank of the Douro, facing Ribeira. Its quay is lined with Port lodges, and the Dom Luís I Bridge and the cable car connect it to the old town.

The Cais de Gaia is a riverfront promenade lined with Port lodges and rabelo boats. Sandeman and Ferreira each run a 50-minute visit with three Ports for €23, and Burmester's classic tasting costs €22. Taylor's cellar is open Monday to Sunday, 10:00 to 18:15, and Real Companhia Velha requires a reservation.

WOW World of Wine is an entertainment district in restored Port wine warehouses, opened in July 2020. Manos do Douro runs a 50-minute Six Bridges cruise for 15 euros, with children aged 4 to 11 at half price. Quevedo Lodge and Wine Bar offers tasting flights from 14 euros and fado on some afternoons.

The Gaia Cable Car runs between the Cais de Gaia and the upper station near Jardim do Morro. The Serra do Pilar Monastery has a terrace over Gaia, Porto and the Dom Luís I Bridge. On Gaia's southern coast, the Praia de Miramar is a long sand beach with the Capela do Senhor da Pedra beside it.

Getting there

The Cais de Gaia faces Porto's Ribeira. The upper deck of the Dom Luís I Bridge carries the Metro and pedestrians between the cathedral area and the Jardim do Morro, and the lower deck keeps road traffic. Burmester's cellar is under the lower deck.

What to see

Cross the Dom Luís I Bridge on the upper deck, then walk down to the quay and choose one or two lodges. Book ahead for the lodges that require a reservation.

Landmark Dom Luís I Bridge Double-deck iron arch bridge over the Douro, designed by Théophile Seyrig and opened in 1886. The upper deck carries the Metro and pedestrians between the cathedral area and the Jardim do Morro, the lower deck keeps road traffic.
